January 2003 - Blue Ridge Mountains
|
A cold chilly month but always gorgeous in the mountains. The large fir tree was made on Romeo entirely of thread and stitched
with monofilament to the finished quilt.

February 2003 - River Bend Sunrise
|
A foggy morning crossing the Savannah River on the way to work. Crossing the bridge over the river in the morning is always
a gloroius sight because it's like an ever changing painting - you never know what you will see! Tree outside the frame was
thread painted on Romeo. Backgrounds are all handpainted with Pebeo Setacolor, not that you can see that it was a lovely
piece of hand painted fabric with all that thread!

March 2003 - Trees and Field
|
I saw this scene of a field of broom sedge and trees with a wonderful glowing winter sunset on a trip to lecture in Greenville.
It stuck in my mind until I recaptured it in cloth and thread and hand dyed fabric. The grove of trees was thread painted
on Romeo and sewn down to the background with black thread.

April 2003 - Blue Heron and Kingfisher
|
You never know what you will see out in the Savannah River. One day I saw a blue heron and a kingfisher out in our back yard
fishing in the edge of the river. The fish must have been running that day for them to have been that close to the house.
This journal is done completely from thread. Why waste a hand paint or hand dyed fabric just to cover it up with thread
like I did in the February and March journals?!

May 2003 - Happy Jack Russells
|
I thought it was time to lighten up after meeting the May journal deadline...WHEW! Anyone that knows us also knows that we
love our two Jack Russell terriers, Jazz and Charley. They are busy happy dogs continually in motion playing ball or chasing
squirrels and deer or swimming in the pool playing water soccer. They are overjoyed when the pool cover comes off because
they know its time to go swimming and play with thier favorite blue ball. Thread was couched with invisible thread. All
thread painting was doen with a zig zag stitch.

June 2003 - Mom's Black Eyed Susans
|
My mother is a fanstastic gardener. All along the road in her yard are flowers that spill over on to the sidewalk in a riot
of color. I took this picture a couple of years ago to make a quilt with and I finally did! Thread painted, free hand drawing,
free motion zig zag to give the grass texture. The mailbox almost looks like a tapestry.

July 2003 - View from Cheap Joes Porch, Boone, NC
|
Exhausted from a day in Boone on a trip to see the 2002 Quilt Journals at Appalachian State, we sat in the rockers at Cheap
Joe's enjoying this fantastic view. We had a jam packed day shopping at TWO quilt shops, a flea market, early morning breakfast
at the VFW, lunch at the Canyons Restaurant and finishing up at Cheap Joe's. We really needed those rockers!
Completely thread painted, no fabric background.

August 2003 - Mom's Garden
|
Every year when I visit the Asheville Quilt show my mother has the most beautiful pink cone flowers in her backyard. All my
friends oh and ah over them. This year they were particularly beautiful. Thread painted on a batik background.

September 2003 - River View
|
This is the view I can see out my studio window on a late Sunday afternoon as I worked on the borders of my quilt journals
at the sewing machine. I really wanted to be outside on this gorgeous September day with my feet propped up on the back porch
rail sitting in the sun, instead of inside finishing the quilt journals. So I thread painted where I wanted to be. Batik
background with thread painting.
